Tri-n-butylcitraat is een uitstekende weekmaker voor zowel cellulosederivaten als vinylharsen. Het biedt verbeterde lichtstabiliteit bij gebruik in celluloseacetaat. Tri-n-butylcitraat is ook een uitstekend ontschuimmiddel in eiwitoplossingen. Tri-n-butylcitraat ondersteunt geen schimmelgroei.

De farmaceutische kwaliteit (verkocht als TBC, NF) voldoet aan alle vereisten zoals vermeld in de US Pharmacopeia / National Formulary.
